Elderly NREGA workers deposed their testimonies before Jan Sansad
New Delhi, 4 Dec 13: Today the elderly working in the NREGA came forward and deposed their testimonies When asked how many of them had job cards most elderly from different states said they did not get job cards in the first place as they were refused on account of being physically weak.
Savitri, Sukhriya and Sankhi stated that when they applied for job cards they were asked for Rs. 500 from the Pradhan of the Panchayat.
Savitri said, “Out of my three sons, two were refused job cards and the widow of the third son was denied pension.’
Sukhriya said, “My payments are usually delayed by three months and I spend a large sum of money commuting to the bank which is10 km away from my home. Measurement of work is often arbitrary leading to underpayment of wages.”
Some elderly when asked what they would do if government considers pension of Rs. 2000 a month said they would buy food and medicines.
Trilochan Sastry, Professor of Quantitative Methods and Information Systems at IIMB since 2003 (Prior to joining IIMB, he was a professor at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad) came to support the dharna today.
He began speaking about his own pension. He said he was getting Rs. 50,000 as pension and because of inflation this pension amount would increase. “People are asking for their money. It’s your money and not the government’s. We pay taxes and it is our right to demand for pension. We worked for the country when we were young, so we are demanding what is our right”, he added.
Today’s Jan Sansad concluded with songs and slogans by the elderly.
